Bracing is good for trees when you are trying to limit them from splitting. Propping branches is best when branches begin to linger towards the ground. Cabling can be a dynamic solution for keeping the heavy loads of tree branches from falling.
When to use a cable
The case for when to use a brace and when to use cables can come pretty close. Unlike bracing, cabling is best done in the upper canopy of the tree. The upper part of the tree will experience far more movement then the bottom of the tree. Wind, for instance, can shake the entire tree. Cables at the top levels will allow some movement while braces should keep its attached branches more still.
Kinds of cabling
While it may be more common to see steel wire, there are synthetic materials that can be less evasive depending on the type of tree and its growth process. Each material has benefits and is best suited be the situation. If the tree has a split, metal cabling is better while synthetic materials can provide more shock absorption while being less evasive to the tree species.
There is also a variation in the way that the cables can be applied. There are the traditional ‘j’ hooks that can be twisted into the tree and there are wraps that can go around the branch.
When there is cabling and bracing applied to a tree for splitting defense. The cables are that first line of defense keeping the tree from splitting. Cables can also help with keeping the bark inclusion from weakening the overall integrity of the tree. Bark inclusion is when there is a split. Two things will happen, a ridge is when bark forms over the split and bark inclusion is when bark forms between the split.

The time to use a brace rod is when there is a separation in your tree that could result in damage. V-shaped and U-shaped crotches between tree branches drive trees to split in the middle. Using a brace rod in your tree can elongate the life of the tree and mitigate risk from damaging your house or car with heavy branches.
Prop installations are necessary when the branches of a tree are hanging towards the ground. From a young tree just starting to a large tree with full branches that seem like they are growing downwards, prop installations can keep the tree growing healthily.
The most common risk of tree damage and breakage is a split tree. As we talked about previously with supplemental supports, a split tree is when there is breakage that creates a ‘v’ shape. Strong weather in Florida can be a big contributor to creating this kind of situation. Lightning, strong winds and tropical storms can damage trees severely.
If you drove down to Bartow, FL right now and park in the golf course parking lot, you’d be met with 15+ beautiful, but mature live oaks. It would be a shame to call up a tree care company to rip any of them out of the ground before exploring other preservation options.
This isn’t the only place where you can find stunning live oaks in Polk County. There are everywhere we go and a very important aspect to our overall ecosystem. When they start looking “threatening” (sagging branches, decaying bark, etc.) its likely the first reaction is to dial up a local tree care service to come and cut three down.
The branches of a tree serve as the first line of defense for the tree itself. When a branch is overextended, it is subject to failure, which can be detrimental to the tree. The solution to dangerous overgrown branches is simple: pruning.
Supplemental supports are support systems that reduce risk or failure associated with the tree’s crown or root system. These supports help the tree by reducing movement in the branches and stem of the trees. By applying structures to weak areas of the tree, you can reduce risk or damage to your property and your trees.
A tree risk assessment is an overall evaluation of a tree’s health and possible risks the tree or your property may face over time. Be able to address any risks that may be associated with trees can prolong your tree’s life and keep your property safe.
Trees get nutrients from the soil. Putting mulch around your trees allows the trees to get added nutrients. Mulch can give your trees nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Mulch also conserves the moisture in the soil, can improve the fertility of the trees and can reduce weed growth around the trunk.
When applying mulch, you should start a few inches away from the trunk of the tree and work your way outward. The outer circle of the tree should not be higher than 4 inches. The inner circle, near your tree’s trunk, should not cover more than an inch of the trunk of your tree.
Root Collar Excavation is the removal of excess soil and mulch from the base and roots of a tree. Having root collar excavation on a tree can save the life of your trees and also promote healthy nutrients the tree needs.
Pruning a tree is an integral part of tree health and growth. The removal of damaged, diseased, or even dead branches and stems can help to prevent insects and decay from entering the tree. Sometimes large limbs of a tree may need to be removed but should always be the last option. The effects of removing branches should be discussed with a qualified tree care provider.
When pruning trees, it is essential that you practice safety and use the proper tools for pruning. These tools would include a small hand saw or a pole pruner.
